FORD RChoiceecommended Editor’s Ford Fiesta

For as long as the Ford Fiesta has been on sale in Ireland, it has been a hugely popular car, and for a good reason. The latest model packs appealing design together with a roomy interior and modern looking cabin and serves it up in a car that is great to drive. It’s nimble around town, comfortable over long distance and still fun to drive. Its large SYNC touchscreen system takes care of all your connectivity, and the choice of three- or fi ve-door body styles gives buyers more options. There are basic versions

to suit those on a tighter budget and more lavish Vignale models to please those who want premium quality in a small car. The ST-Line has a sporty look without becoming too insurance un-friendly, while the Fiesta Active rides taller to suit more adventurous types or those seeking added comfort. Its chunky styling looks smart too. The Fiesta ST remains one of the best hot hatches money can buy thanks to its superb chassis and suspension setup, alongside the fantastic 200hp 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine.

Ford Ka+

The Ka+ is a Fiesta-sized car, but for less cash, off ering a budget way into motoring for Ford. It was mildly refreshed for 2019 and beyond, sporting a new array of three-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol engines and a very simple range. There’s a basic Studio version, which comes with a 70hp engine, while all models above the next step up (Zetec) get an 85hp unit. Whichever engine you go for, it is mated to a fi ve-speed manual gearbox that sends drive to the front wheels. Although they’re not exactly laden with toys, the specifi cations of the Ka+ include some useful necessities, so the Zetec trim has electric front windows and mirrors and air conditioning, for instance. There’s an Active off -road-style model at the top of the range and all Ka+ versions drive perfectly sweetly for their primary use as cheap and cheerful urban/semi-urban transportation.

Ford EcoSport

If you’re looking for a compact crossover, you will not be short of choice right now. Ford’s off ering to the segment has never been a strong contender, leading to the company introducing two updates to the model since its debut. In its current guise, it is much better than before, but it still doesn’t match some of the other off erings out there. The ST-Line model gets a sportier image and comes with a contrasting black roof and door mirrors. A standard-fi t eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system is a plus, and the rest of the interior fi nish isn’t bad, either. The EcoSport is best-suited to town and urban driving where its 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine shines, but if you need to do higher mileage, the 1.5-litre EcoBlue diesel should prove cheap to run.
