Volkswagen RChoiceecommended Editor’s Volkswagen Polo
The Polo enjoys a long and storied history that dates back more than 40 years. This current model continues to uphold the tradition of being one of the best cars in the supermini segment. Over the generations, the Polo has grown, and while it may still be considered a small car by today’s standards, it’s far from being tight on space. The contemporary dashboard layout includes up to an eight-inch touchscreen display with the latest connectivity features. With a range of engines from an 80hp

three-cylinder petrol unit to the spicy 200hp 2.0-litre in the GTI, there’s a Polo fl avour to suit most people. In keeping with tradition, the Polo GTI gets sport seats that carry the signature tartan inserts, while fl ashes of red across the dashboard give the interior more of a performance fl avour. If you want the sporty look without having to shell out for the range- topping engine, the Polo R-Line model gives you just that, but we’d advise choosing the turbocharged 90hp engine in this case.

Volkswagen T-Roc
Rather than just downscaling the Tiguan for the C-SUV segment, Volkswagen gave the T-Roc a much more unique look. Built using the same underpinnings as the Golf, it is diff erentiated by its elevated driving position. The T-Roc is available with the option of all-wheel drive (which Volkswagen calls 4Motion), though it’s a car that is geared more towards on-road driving. Both automatic and manual gearbox options are available with most engines. For the top-spec R-Line model, Volkswagen adds stiff er sports suspension, which may not be to everyone’s liking. The sweet spot between economy and performance is the 150hp 1.5-litre TSI Evo petrol engine, as it has enough punch when you want to have fun yet is also capable of slipping into a fuel-saving two-cylinder mode unnoticed. There’s plenty of scope for personalisation, such as choosing contrasting roof colours and larger wheel designs, but these can quickly drive up the overall cost.

Volkswagen Touran
The SUV has become the default consideration when it comes to choosing family transport or for those needing to carry more passengers. Still, Volkswagen continues to off er a range of MPVs that are every bit, if not more, up to the task at hand. In the aging Touran, the 1.5-litre petrol engine is smooth and adds to the sense of refi nement, while a 2.0-litre diesel provides more pulling power. The Touran manages to seat up to seven people and still has room for luggage and other oddments thanks to a well-thought-out cabin that has no less than 48 cubby holes and storage bins dotted around it. It may not have the practical sliding doors of other MPVs, but with three individual seats in the middle row and two in the third row, with many ISOFIX points, it’s well-suited to a young family. And when the rearmost seats aren’t required, they fold fl at into the boot fl oor to increase cargo volume.
