OUR PICK OF THE RANGE 4.4 SDV8 SWB Autobiography
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Sport SDV6 (306hp) HSE Dynamic
Range Rover
The Range Rover came to defi ne luxury SUVs when it appeared in the 1970s and, while plenty of upmarket contenders have appeared to challenge its claim to the throne in the intervening years, the Mk4 Rangie continues to be a prestige object of automotive desire. It comes in short- or long-wheelbase formats, with a wide variety of powerful petrol and diesel engines – choose anything from a 275hp six-cylinder 3.0-litre turbodiesel to a 565hp supercharged V8 petrol stormer. There’s even a plug-in hybrid model, badged the P400e, which teams a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with electric power; emissions are then rated at just 72g/km, with the P400e capable of up to 48km in zero-emissions mode alone. Doesn’t matter which model you go for, though, as this is one of the most comfortable and plush vehicles to travel in that’s on sale right now.
Range Rover Sport
If you don’t need the grandeur of the full-sized Range Rover, but you love its iconic shape and nature, then how about the Range Rover Sport? Where the 2005-2013 Mk1 Sport was a bit of a misnomer, not to mention of questionable taste, the 2013-launched Mk2 was much more befi tting of the Range Rover nameplate. Despite being smaller than the ‘proper’ fi ve-seat Range Rover, the Sport can optionally be had with seven seats and it comes with largely the same array of engines as the bigger Rangie – only it has a 575hp SVR high-performance derivative as its fl agship. The Sport might not be quite as comfortable to travel in as its big brother, but it is a lot more entertaining to drive.
Range Rover Velar
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Velar R-Dynamic D275
Slotting in between the Range Rover Sport and Evoque, the Velar is a real head-turner that shows Land Rover design at its best. It is easily one of the best-looking SUVs on sale today, as long as you choose one of the higher specifi cation grades. With larger wheels and possibly a contrasting roofl ine, the sleek bodywork and fl ush door handles combine to create a vehicle that will make you the envy of many motorists. It’s equally appealing inside where the minimalist cabin is tastefully equipped with more touchscreen real estate than buttons. A wide range of engines varies from reasonably frugal diesels to a high-performance 5.0-litre V8-powered SVR model.
