OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Hatch Cooper S
MINI Hatch
Since its relaunch in the BMW-owned era, the MINI Hatch has remained one of the most desirable small premium cars, continuing to evolve as a fun driver’s car with mass appeal. It has also grown, even to the point of spawning a fi ve-door version for those with families, although even that version remains relatively tight when it comes to interior space. Modern features like a head-up display and up to an 8.8-inch touchscreen give most people all the tech and connectivity expected from such a car, while luxuries like heated seats become must-have items. At the core of the MINI Hatch are an excellent chassis and fun-to-drive nature that is present regardless of which engine you choose. Keener drivers chasing a thrill will like the John Cooper Works model, which will be surpassed by a new 306hp ‘GP’ version later in 2020. There’s also a new all-electric version on the way.
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Convertible Cooper S
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Clubman Cooper D
MINI Convertible
Convertible cars aren’t all that common in Ireland, and even fewer options are available when you get down into the smaller sized vehicles where typically a retractable roof section is the most you get. MINI sticks with a full folding fabric roof for its Convertible model that is based on the three-door MINI Hatch. As you might expect, its style does come with some compromises, namely less passenger and boot space and limited rear visibly due to how the roof sits behind the rear seats when open. None of that really matters though because this is one seriously fun car to drive and it just oozes cool. The Cooper Convertible is ideal for city driving, though if you’re chasing more fun, the Cooper S is the one to have.
MINI Clubman
Launched in 2015, the second-generation MINI Clubman is a six-door (yes, six) estate, being the practical one of the family. It has a 1,250-litre boot and the same idiosyncratic rear ‘barn doors’ at the back as its predecessor. It also has four proper doors into the passenger cabin; the Mk1 MINI Clubman made do with an asymmetric three. In 2019, the Clubman range was updated with new looks, including the controversial ‘Union Jack’ rear light clusters, while the fl agship John Cooper Works performance derivative went from 231hp previously to a whopping 306hp now, making it the most powerful production MINI yet. You don’t need the JCW, though, as the Clubman is a relaxed, comfortable car, so one of the 136hp Cooper, 192hp Cooper S or 150hp Cooper D will suffi ce. We’d say the diesel is the best match for the practical nature of this unusual estate.
