OUR PICK OF THE RANGE RX 450h Luxury

Lexus RC

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE RC 300h F Sport

Premium coupes aren’t all that common and typically buyers look to well-known models like the Audi A5 and BMW 4 Series, but the Lexus RC makes for an attractive alternative. It’s the only one in the segment that off ers a hybrid-only drivetrain and while its outright performance might not be an equal match for the competition, we think it’s worthy of consideration. Tweaks to the model in 2019 softened off the exterior styling, but the interior is now starting to look dated when compared to its rivals’. As with the others in this segment, the RC’s rear seats are better suited to bags and coats than passengers. The 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with its hybrid assistance off ers up a quiet and refi ned driving experience once you don’t hurry it along. The RC is a car for those seeking something a little diff erent to the mainstream buyer.

Lexus ES

The Lexus ES takes over from the GS as the company’s protagonist in the executive saloon market, where it goes up against stiff competition from the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. On looks alone, the ES is arguably the most striking, though it lags behind its rivals when it comes to boot space and Lexus doesn’t off er an estate version. Also setting the ES apart is that it is only available as a petrol-electric hybrid, which won’t be ideal for company car buyers looking to reclaim VAT on fuel. Nonetheless, the 2.5-litre engine is smooth, as is the ride quality that benefi ts from a new type of shock absorber that puts it on a par with the best air suspension systems around. That refi nement, coupled with Lexus’ reputation for reliability, makes a strong case for the ES.

Lexus RX

The sharp lines and creases in the taut bodywork of the Lexus RX might not be to everyone’s taste, though it does stand out on the street. When you sit into the well-appointed cabin, you get a real sense of how well made this Lexus is, from the quality of the materials used, right down to the weighted movement of the dial for the volume, which feels more like a high-end home stereo system than something you’d get in a car. Lexus does off er a third row of seats in the RX L model, and the rear of the cars was redesigned to do so, but this third row remains tight on space, and it’s best to think of it as a ‘fi ve-plus-two’ rather than a proper seven-seater. Both versions use the same 3.5-litre petrol- electric V6 hybrid system and do so to good eff ect. You won’t get diesel-like fuel economy, but careful driving will see reasonable effi ciency and it is exceptionally smooth and refi ned to drive.
