BMW X4


Turning an SUV into a coupe isn’t easy and, up until now, the BMW X4 looked a little awkward. This latest model does have a more resolved design, though, while interior space isn’t at as much of a premium as the sloping roofl ine might suggest. Beneath the skin, it shares a lot with the BMW X3, though the suspension is a touch fi rmer to refl ect the sportier image. Aside from the two high- performance models, the 360hp M40i and 510hp X4 M Competition, the X4 is an all-diesel aff air, and the xDrive20d base engine delivers decent performance with respectable fuel consumption. Good sound insulation, along with one of the best automatic transmissions on the market, makes the BMW X4 an enjoyable drive whichever version you choose.

When the BMW X5 fi rst burst onto the scene in 1999, it helped fuel what would become the SUV craze that still shows no signs of abating. Skip forward two decades and this fourth- generation version of the X5 is more desirable than ever. Having grown in every direction, the X5 commands real presence on the road, and the interior is top rate. Third-row seating is available as an option, but there’s limited legroom in the rearmost seats. A potent X5 M model, with 625hp and 750Nm, should keep the petrolheads happy, but what is likely to be of greater interest in Ireland is the new xDrive45e plug-in hybrid version. Capable of up to 87 kilometres on battery power alone, it could make daily commuting without ever using the six-cylinder petrol engine a possibility for many.
