Kia XCeed Kia Stonic
Kia re-thought its entry to the lucrative B-segment crossover market in 2017, replacing the boxy but fl awed Soul with the smoother Stonic. Its name is a portmanteau of ‘speedy’ and ‘tonic’, and this crossover majors on Kia’s traditional strengths: it has a well-built, spacious and well-equipped interior, the exterior is pretty smart and stylish (and can be specifi ed in various bright/two-tone colours schemes for maximum youthfulness) and it should prove to be an easy, frugal car to run, all backed up by the best warranty in the business. A wide range of petrol and diesel engines are off ered for the Stonic in a variety of trim grades, but we think the best engine is the 120hp 1.0-litre T-GDi three-cylinder turbo petrol engine, which is only available at pricey K3 (7DCT auto) and K4 (six-speed manual) levels.

Adding further diversifi cation to the Kia Ceed line-up is a more rugged-looking crossover variant called the XCeed. There’s more to the XCeed than just some wheel arch trims too. Almost every body panel is unique, adding up to what is quite a diff erent looking car to the hatchback that partially shares its name. Despite the sportier proportions, the XCeed doesn’t skip on the practical features and, in addition to decent rear passenger space, the boot is a useful 426 litres in size. Unlike many of its rivals, Kia only off ers the XCeed with a turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engine that drives the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. There are three specifi cation grades to choose from and higher-spec models can be ordered with vibrant yellow colour packs to lift the interior, though if that’s not your thing, there are more subdued options available. Buyers can also avail of a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
