BMW 5 Series Competition in the executive segment has always been fi erce, yet BMW once again has come out on top with its seventh-generation 5 Series. With styling that is spot-on and almost as much room inside as its larger 7 Series sibling, the 5 Series has plenty going for it. There is also an estate version, called a Touring, if you need more boot space. It has all the right technology to keep you connected on the go and has the comfort and refi nement to make long distances a breeze. Meanwhile, the 530e plug-in hybrid can lower running costs, though its battery-only range isn’t huge. If outright speed is more your thing, then the M5 Competition will be of interest. Its 4.4-litre twin- turbocharged V8 pumps out 625hp and it’s quick enough to keep up with almost any sports car.

BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo
The 6 Series Gran Turismo, or GT, is somewhat unique in the BMW range. It lies at the intersection between saloon, estate and SUV. It might not be what you’d call classically elegant, but it a well-packaged design. The unusual body shape allows for passenger space that’s almost unrivalled at this price point without sacrifi cing on boot capacity. Whether you’re driving or being driven, the 6 Series GT is remarkably smooth and refi ned when on the move and shrinks distances with ease. The option of xDrive all-wheel drive ensures year-round capability while sticking to the diesel version should make for more economical running over the petrol version.

BMW 7 Series
The BMW 7 Series luxury saloon came in for its midlife facelift in 2019, bringing with it a controversial restyle to the front of the car with a simply massive radiator grille. Apparently its buyers wanted more presence and grandeur, to be certain that nobody could mistake their car for the lesser 5 Series. Job done, no matter what you think of the new look. Thankfully, behind that nose, the 7 Series is better than ever at transporting the occupants in comfort and silence, and for those that plan to sit in the back a lot, there’s a long-wheelbase model in the line-up, plus lots of rear-seat technology to distract you. The diesel 7 Series remains a favourite with chauff eurs, but the new plug-in hybrid version, the 745e, could soon outstrip it thanks to its low running costs and utter silence when running in electric mode. Perversely, BMW still off ers buyers an insanely quick 760i model powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.6-litre V12 petrol engine.
