Mercedes-Benz E-Class

There isn’t much to separate the top players in the highly competitive executive saloon class, but the Mercedes E-Class hasn’t made life easy for its two chief rivals, the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series. A fabulous interior that looks and feels just as roomy and comfortable as the more luxurious S-Class is complemented by a drive that is relaxed and features a smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission. Capable of dispatching vast distances with ease, the E-Class is available with plenty of advanced driver assistance tech. Rear passenger space

is generous, while a 540-litre boot can comfortably swallow up plenty of golf clubs. We’re equally big fans of the estate version that has a massive 1,820 litres of capacity. Most company car users will gravitate towards the economical diesel engines, though the plug-in hybrid versions add signifi cant torque boosts while minimising emissions, making them something of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Naturally, there is the tempting off er of Mercedes-AMG models should you lust for more high-octane performance.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class

It may be the entry-point to the Mercedes range, but the A-Class is every bit as premium as models further up the ladder. There’s more to it than merely stylish looks, too; Mercedes off ers some of its latest technology in the A-Class. This tech includes augmented reality satnav that displays which turn to take via the camera system. Its interior quality is excellent with an overall design that is very modern. Four diesel and four petrol engines provide plenty of choice, and the AMG A 35 will satisfy keener drivers with its 306hp. A range-topping AMG A 45 S model sets new benchmarks for hot hatches thanks to its 421hp output. In addition to the fi ve-door hatchback, there is a four-door saloon version of the A-Class (right). It bears more than a passing resemblance to the more expensive Mercedes CLA, with seemingly little sacrifi ce in quality or space.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class

The B-Class compact MPV might not have the same appeal as an SUV, but for families in particular, it scores well for interior space and its practical design. It may not be much larger than the Mercedes A-Class hatchback, but the B-Class does benefi t from extra headroom and more rear passenger legroom. Unlike the BMW 2 Series Grand Tourer and Volkswagen Touran, the B-Class is only available as a fi ve-seater. It shares the same excellent interior design as the A-Class, though, which puts it ahead of the competition. A similar range of engines is also available with both automatic and manual gearboxes and, joining these is a new plug-in hybrid version off ering as much as 69 kilometres of battery range.
