Mazda’s largest crossover- SUV is the CX-5, which is a classy, understated and likeable machine. It evolved into its second generation in 2017 and it comes as a fi ve-seat vehicle with the choice of petrol or diesel engines, either two- or four-wheel drive and either a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. It can get pretty pricey at the top end of the tree, but the good news is that the 150hp 2.2-litre turbodiesel will do everything you could require of an SUV of this size, providing excellent refi nement and economy without breaking the bank. Some of the Mazda’s interior fi nishing is a little plain by the premium class standards but it is beautifully wrought, while the chassis is surprisingly lively if you fancy trying out the CX-5’s handling.

Mazda6
Several subtle updates to the Mazda6 over the years have kept the fl agship saloon at the sharp end of the segment. It mixes appreciable design with a premium interior regardless of which of the various specifi cation grades you choose. The 2.0-litre petrol line-up gets 145- and 165hp outputs, though the 2.2-litre diesel is available with 150- and 184hp, while also benefi ting from greater torque and lower emissions. In the saloon you get 480 litres of boot space and, should you need more, the Tourer (estate) model can swallow up 552 litres - or up to 1,664 litres with the rear seats folded down. Whichever you choose, the Mazda6 makes for a lovely package. It may seem like an outlier in the segment, but it is every bit a rival for the more established premium brands that it competes with.
