Hyundai RChoiceecommended Editor’s IS SOMETHING MISSING?
A new Hyundai i10 has been revealed ahead of its 2020 launch.
Hyundai i30
This is arguably Hyundai’s best car right now. The i30 is available in three body styles, which are the regular fi ve-door hatchback, a handsome estate called the i30 Tourer and then a swoopy coupe-like fi ve-door called the Fastback. The hatch has the most choice of engines: a 120hp 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol, a 100hp 1.4-litre MPI petrol and then a 110hp 1.6-litre CRDi turbodiesel; the

Tourer drops the 1.4 but keeps the other two; and the Fastback just operates in Ireland with the 1.0 T-GDi 120hp unit. No regular i30 is that thrilling to drive, although they are refi ned and smooth to travel in, with good, solid cabins replete with toys. But if you want a bit of excitement, both the hatch and the Fastback are available in 275hp ‘N’ form – hot hatchbacks that are amongst the very best in the business.
Hyundai i20
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE i20 Deluxe 1.2 MPI 84
Hyundai’s i20 Mk2 launched in 2014 and the quality upswing from its predecessor was notable. A variety of small, modest engines powered the pre-facelift i20, before an Active crossover-inspired model with black plastic cladding and a higher ride height appeared in 2016. So diff erent was the three-door model to the fi ve-door that the Korean company felt confi dent enough to christen it the i20 Coupe, although post-facelift, only the fi ve-door is available in Ireland. A pair of 1.2-litre MPI petrol engines provide motive power, delivering either 75- or 84hp, and while the i20 isn’t exciting, it does come with the tempting fi ve-year manufacturer warranty and plenty of standard equipment to make it as appealing as possible.

Hyundai ix20
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE ix20 1.4 CRDi
Despite the fact the Hyundai i20 Active arrived in 2016, the company continues to off er the ix20, which is more of a mini-MPV than a crossover. It’s not particularly engaging to drive, the ix20, but it is reasonably comfortable and refi ned on a cruise. Its cabin is showing its considerable age now, though, as the car has been out since 2010 and is due for replacement. High levels of standard equipment are the norm for Hyundai, and the ix20 is no exception, so it comes down to engine choice – there’s a 1.4-litre petrol with a fi ve-speed manual, a 1.6-litre petrol with an automatic and a 1.4-litre turbodiesel with a six-speed manual. Of these, we reckon the torquey 1.4 diesel is the best one to go for if you cover higher mileage on motorway in particular.
