PEUGEOT RChoiceecommended Editor’s IS SOMETHING MISSING?

The popular Peugeot 2008 crossover is about to be replaced by an incredibly stylish new model, and there will even be an electric version.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE 208 1.2 PureTech 100 GT Line manual

Peugeot 208 Peugeot’s going on a full style off ensive with this little beauty. There are no competitors in the B-sector supermini segment that have the sheer élan of the new 208, which looks like a concept car rolled off a motor show stand. It also has a class- leading interior, complete with a fancy 3D digital instrument cluster on most models, and there’s even a pure electric model with a 50kWh battery and a 340km range, which is called the e-208. However, that’s pricey and not much fun to drive, and it has a fi rm ride – something that affl icts all new 208s to a degree. Nevertheless, if you go for the mid-spec 102hp PureTech petrol (badged as a 100) and stick to a manual gearbox with a high trim specifi cation, you get the best-looking car in this class with a top-notch interior and decent driving manners, all for a reasonable price.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE 308 Allure 1.2 PureTech EAT8

Peugeot 108

Peugeot’s 108 city car was born out of a joint project between PSA and Toyota, in which the Peugeot 108, the Citroen C1 and the Toyota Aygo are essentially the same car, only badge-engineered to each brand. Originally, the Peugeot entrant was the 107, but in 2014, the second-generation trifecta of tiny cars saw the Peugeot become the 108. It is now an old car competing in a dwindling marketplace, with just the solitary 1.0-litre three-cylinder 72hp VTi engine off ered with a fi ve-speed manual gearbox; all you can choose is whether you want Active or Allure specifi cation. As cheap run-arounds go, it’s fi ne, but there are newer, better rivals in this class and the 108 doesn’t feel up to the standard of some of Peugeot’s most cutting-edge vehicles.

Peugeot 308

The Peugeot 308 is a hatchback that frequently seems to get overlooked. The interior of the 308 is somewhat unique due to what Peugeot calls the ‘i-cockpit’ design that uses a smaller-than-average steering wheel to allow for the instrument display to be viewed above it, therefore being closer to the driver’s fi eld of vision. Peugeot off ers the 308 in three specifi cation grades and, to give the company credit, these tend to be more generously equipped than rival off erings. All the engines that Peugeot off ers perform well on the emissions front and the 1.2-litre petrol engine suits the car well, especially when paired with the eight-speed automatic gearbox. Sadly, due to ever-tightening emissions regulations, there is no longer a high-performance 308 GTi model on sale, but Peugeot does sell the 308 as an SW estate, and this version has a big boot capacity of 660 litres.
