Toyota GT86
Another tie-up creation, this time Toyota pairing with Subaru to create the GT86 and BRZ sports coupes (respectively). The GT86’s name harks back to a rear-wheel-drive Corolla Levin of the 1980s, which had the codename ‘AE86’, and which became something of a cult icon in its homeland and further afi eld. The modern interpretation features a 2.0-litre horizontally opposed four- cylinder non-turbo petrol engine driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox (there is an auto option, but please don’t buy that…) and a limited-slip diff erential on the back axle. It was signifi cantly updated in 2017 but remains a staunchly old-school driving experience – yet that is precisely the GT86’s charm. You must work at it, as the normally aspirated engine lacks torque, but when you do, the chassis rewards are there in spades. Cars like this won’t last forever, so buy a GT86 now, while you still can.
Toyota Land Cruiser
The words ‘Land Cruiser’ are synonymous with unimpeachable reliability and even indestructibility. Not for no reason are these things the preferred wheels in the Australian Outback, where breakdowns can sometimes be fatal for the car’s occupants; the Land Cruiser’s robustness therefore makes it the natural choice. So, enjoy some of that bomb-proof reputation here in Ireland, where the weather’s perhaps not quite so hostile but obviously quite soggy from
time to time. The Land Cruiser masquerades as a plush SUV but underneath the polish is the rugged heart of a proper 4x4, with locking diff erentials and a ladder-frame chassis being the hallmarks of go-anywhere ability. It’s pricey as a civilian vehicle (there’s just one fi ve-seat, long-wheelbase derivative that isn’t a commercial vehicle in the price lists, at €71,110) and somewhat compromised on the road, but the 2.8-litre 177hp turbodiesel will always get you wherever you want to go.
