OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Sharan 2.0 TDI 150 manual Comfortline

Volkswagen Amarok Volkswagen Sharan

The SEAT Alhambra and Volkswagen Sharan are pretty much the same vehicle: large, seven-seat MPVs with brilliantly executed cabins that make life with lots of kids tremendously easy. The Sharan’s problem, though, is that it’s a little bit more expensive than the Alhambra, so you’ve got to rationalise precisely how much you want that VW badge. Still, if you do decide to go for the Sharan, a simple two-trim, one- drivetrain line-up means all you’ve got to do is choose between the cheaper Comfortline spec or the plusher Highline. Go for the latter and you’re looking at nearly 50 grand, though…

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Amarok Highline 3.0 TDI V6

The popularity of pickups is on the rise, and nowadays there is an increasing number of brands adding such models to their ranges. Most of these are workhorses equipped with engines that are suffi ciently powerful for the job but can often be unrefi ned. Keen to avoid this, Volkswagen fi ts only a 3.0-litre V6 diesel to its Amarok pickup. With 580Nm of torque and a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission, this beast is ideal for towing and can comfortably handle all but the most extreme off - road scenarios. The double-cab design features one of the more refi ned interiors in the sector, with many of the features from Volkswagen’s passenger cars transferring across. Having that extra power in reserve means that the Amarok drives well on the road and rarely seems strained even when carrying a load. While it isn’t the cheapest pickup on sale, it’s clear to see what sets this one apart from the competition.

IS SOMETHING MISSING?

Obviously, the evergreen Volkswagen Golf is missing from these pages. The reason being there’s a brand-new model on the way, and we’ve not tested it before Auto Ireland went to print.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Tiguan 1.5 EcoTSI ACT R-Design

Volkswagen Tiguan

The original Tiguan was a bit of a blobby, underwhelming machine, but the Mk2, launched in 2016, is much more like it – and it looks brilliant in R-Design trim (which is, admittedly, expensive). There are two body lengths, which are the fi ve-seat short-wheelbase known only as the Tiguan and then the seven-seat long-wheelbase model (which arrived a year after the regular SUV) that Volkswagen calls the Allspace. Realistically, this 215mm-longer version is nice and all, but the third row of seats are only for kids and you sacrifi ce a lot of boot space to have them in place. You’re better off with the standard car, which comes with a variety of Volkswagen’s typically smooth petrol and diesel engines, but the 130hp 1.5 TSI with cylinder deactivation tech is a perfectly decent unit for this size of SUV.
