Next year, a few stalwarts of the car industry will be reinvented, and joined in the market by many more models we’ve never seen before. Our editor, Shane O’ Donoghue, looks at what’s coming in 2020.


D


espite a likely merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and Groupe PSA (Peugeot,


Citroen, etc.), we hope that Alfa Romeo (part of the FCA clan) can continue with its launch of the stylish Tonale mid-sized SUV next year, as it needs something like that to bolster sales. In contrast, there’s no shortage of new


models coming from Audi, even if it has already had a busy year. Of most importance to the brand will be a new A3, but also keep an eye out for the e-tron Sportback, the supercar-like rear-wheel-drive Audi R8 and the almost as quick RS Q8 super-SUV. Keeping up with its German neighbour,


BMW will launch its fi rst ever 2 Series Gran Coupe next year, along with a brand-new 4 Series range. The 5 Series and 6 Series Gran Tourer come in for midlife updates and the company’s fi rst all-electric model since the i3 will be launched, in the shape of the battery powered X3, called the iX3.


Audi e-tron Sportback Electrifi cation is also at the forefront of


Citroën’s mind as it adds a plug-in hybrid version of the C5 Aircross to the range and reinvents its C-segment C4 hatchback, most likely including an all-electric option.


Cupra, the high-performance brand that


is slowly moving away from its parent SEAT company, is expected to launch a high-end new SUV based on the oddly titled Formentor concept car next year, most likely with plug-in hybrid power.


BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Another ‘breakaway’ brand, DS (this time


from Citroën), is making slow ground in Ireland, but the incoming DS 3 Crossback should help its fortunes – and it’ll be off ered in all-electric format. Fiat appears to be pinning all its hopes


on small cars and its two most successful nameplates, the Panda and the 500, are coming in for revision in 2020. The Panda will get a modest facelift and modernisation, while the next-generation 500 is mooted to be electric only.
