Following in the footsteps of countless pilgrims since the 9th Century, we follow the legendary route to Santiago de Compostela – the resting place of Saint James. We walk along the most scenic section between Burgos and Santiago: across the high plains of the Castilian Meseta and into the Galicia mountains. We discover Gothic cathedrals, visit disused gold mines and climb to the Iron Cross (1,482m) along the way.

ITINERARY
Day 1 Fly to Bilbao. Day 2 Burgos Explore the town and its magnificent cathedral. Drive to the village of Hornillos and walk to Hontanas. Drive to Leon. Day 3 Leon Take a guided walk around the medieval city and visit its gothic cathedral. Drive to Astorga, home to Antoni Gaudi’s Bishops Palace. Day 4 Highest peak Start from Astorga and climb to the Iron Cross (1,482m). Descend to Molinaseca and drive to Las Medulas. Day 5 Las Medulas Free day to explore the disused gold mines. Days 6/8 Galicia Trek through the mountains passing unspoilt landscapes and medieval villages. Day 9 Octopus Stop in the village of Melide, renowned for its delicious seafood. Walk to Boente. Days 10/11 Santiago de Compostela Walk to Alto de Santa Irene, on the outskirts of the city. Drive the final section. Time to explore the city’s magnificent architecture. Optional trip to Cape Finisterre. Day 12 Fly to the UK.

CYCLING IN NORTHERN SPAIN

Following the route of ancient pilgrims we cycle sections of the legendary trail to Santiago de Compostela – the resting place of Saint James. The trip follows the last 200 kilometres of the scenic route through northern Spain, starting on the high plains of the Castilian meseta. We ascend into the fertile region of the Bierzo and traverse the rolling hills of Galicia to the delightful city of Santiago.

ITINERARY
Day 1 Fly to Bilbao. Admire the remarkable architecture of the Guggenheim Museum. Day 2 Leon Drive to medieval Leon for lunch. Cycle to Astorga across a section of the Meseta Plains. Day 3 Bierzo Hills Cross the fertile region of the Bierzo hills. Stop at the Cruz de Ferro ‘Iron Cross’ at 1482m, the highest point along the trail where pilgrims deposit a stone in prayer. Day 4 Gateway to Galicia Drive to the scenic town of O’Cebreiro where unusual stone- rounded houses and thatched roofs mark the entry into Galicia. Cycle to Tricastela and continue to Samos. Days 5/6 Rolling Hills of Galicia Cycle through the mountains passing unspoilt landscapes and medieval villages. Day 7 Santiago Reach the final destination of the route. Explore the city including the cathedral. In the afternoon you are free to enjoy the city’s magnificent architecture. Day 8 Fly to the UK.
