On this holiday in West Africa we discover two different nations: tropical Gambia and exotic Senegal. We walk through French colonial towns, see prolific birdlife and visit the megalithic stone circles at Wassu. We also explore some of the region’s finest wildlife parks, cruise down the Gambia River and venture into the Saloum Delta by traditional pirogue canoe.
ITINERARY
Day 1 Overnight flight to Dakar (Senegal). Day 2 Isle de Gorée A short boat journey to the small island to explore the quiet streets and learn about the slave heritage. Days 4/5 National Parks Explore the colonial city of Saint- Louis. Visit two of West Africa’s most important bird reserves: Djoudj and Langue de Barbarie National Parks. Enjoy a birdwatching safari by pirogue boat to see pelicans, spoonbills and flamingos. Day 6 Drive to Georgetown (Gambia) stopping to visit the Touba Mosque. Days 7/8 Gambia River Spend two days relaxing aboard the riverboat and pausing at local villages. Visit Wassu Stone Circles. Day 9 Tendaba Explore the wildlife of Kiang West National Park and Baobolong Wetland Reserve. Days 10/11 Saloum Delta National Park (Senegal) Travel to the Saloum Delta to explore the myriad of islands and waterways by pirogue boat. Day 12 Dakar Drive along the coast to the capital and explore the city. Day 13 Overnight flight to the UK.

Days 1/2 Overnight flight to Asmara. Explore the Italian Art Deco architecture, cafes and boulevards of the capital. Drive north to the town of Keren. Day 3 Highland life Set on a plateau surrounded by ochre mountains, Keren is the heart of Eritrea’s agricultural community. Experience the bustle of the town’s weekly market. Visit the sobering British and Italian war cemeteries. Day 4 Tropical forest Travel to the coast, stopping to visit an agricultural institute at Hagaz and the tropical forest of Filfil. Day 5 Red Sea Stroll the alleyways and relax among the Turkish, Italian and Egyptian architecture at the port of Massawa. Day 6 Steam Train Return to Asmara. There is the opportunity to take the famous Italian-era steam train from Nefasit. Days 7/8 Adi Keyh Drive south to explore the ruins of Qohaito, part of the once great Axumite civilisation thought to date back 2000 years. Day 9 Fly to the UK.
