On this holiday we cruise among the remote atolls of the idyllic Maldives aboard a traditional Dhoni. We eat and sleep aboard the boat as we sail between the unspoilt palm-fringed tropical islands of South Male, Felidhoo and Meemu. On the way we visit small fishing villages and stop to swim or snorkel over the beautiful coral reefs.

ITINERARY


Day 1/2 Overnight flight to Male on Hulhule Island. Meet the crew and board the dhoni. Set sail towards the South Male Atolls. Anchor for the night off the island of Guraidhoo or Rihiveli. Day 3 Dhoni cruise Sail to Anbaraa Island. Spend the afternoon swimming or snorkelling. There is the possibility of a beach barbecue in the evening. Day 4 Meemu Atoll Continue to the uninhabited island of Fenboa Finolhu. Optional swimming and snorkelling. Day 5 Dhiggaru Dock in the harbour and visit the village. In the evening enjoy a traditional Bodu Beru music performance. Days 6/7 South Male Atoll Experience village life with a visit to Fulidhoo. Travel north past Gulhi or Maafushi to Emboodhoo Finolhu. Day 8 Male Sail back to the capital. Spend the afternoon exploring the town: visit the Grand Friday Mosque, National Museum and local markets. Enjoy a final meal on board the dhoni. Day 9 Fly to the UK.

Days 1/2 Overnight flight to Colombo; transfer to the nearby beach resort of Negombo. Days 3/4 Anuradhapura We explore the ancient ruined city of Anuradhapura and visit Mihintale, Sri Lanka’s cradle of Buddhism. Day 5 Dambulla Caves Visit Aukana’s immense standing Buddha and the stunning Buddhist grottoes of Dambulla. Day 6 Polonnaruwa Explore ancient Polonnaruwa; optional elephant back safari in the Minneriya National Park. Day 7 Sky Fortress Ascend the Lion Rock at Sigiriya and enjoy its famous ‘heavenly maidens’ painted in a niche in the sheer cliff face. Day 8 Kandy See the Temple of the Tooth and Botanical gardens. Days 9/11 Tea Country Drive through tea plantations, visit a tea factory and during the pilgrimage season (Dec - Apr) there’s the chance to ascend Adam’s Peak. Days 12/14 Unawatune We visit the Buduruvagala rock Buddha en route to Unawatuna – an easy-going place to swim, relax, visit the Dutch city of Galle or even take a boat trip in search of whales (Dec - Apr only). Day 15 Negombo Drive back to Negombo. Day 16 Fly to Male, board dhoni and set sail. Days 17/21 Dhoni Cruise Leaving the main North Male Atoll behind, we aim to head through South Male and Felidhoo Atolls, stopping in small harbours or at uninhabited islands along the way. Although our route is ultimately governed by the weather, we plan to reach Meemu (Mulaku) Atoll in the south, where we visit small fishing villages. There will be daily opportunities for swimming and snorkelling in the clear blue waters to see the varied and vibrant marine life. Day 22 Male Cruise back to Day 23 Fly UK.
