Cycling along quiet back roads and farm tracks we discover the beautiful region of Cappadocia in central Turkey. Soft lava and ash rock has eroded to form a landscape unlike any other on earth. We cycle among the contoured cliffs and rock-cut churches of the Ihlara Valley and discover the underground network of tunnels and cities in Kaymakli.

ITINERARY


Day 1 Fly to Ankara. Day 2 Ihlara Valley Cycle through the narrow valley of Ihlara. Admire the spectacular scenery and rock-cut churches carved into cliff walls. Day 3 Kaymakli Underground City Explore this underground city. Cycle along gentle trails to Mustafapasa through valleys lined with cone shaped ‘fairy chimneys’. Days 4/7 Cycle Cappadocia Cycle through local villages and experience the famous Turkish hospitality. Travel through the White Valley to Uchisar for panoramic views of the whole region. Drive to Ankara. Day 8 Fly to the UK.

Following ancient pathways we discover this beautiful region of central Turkey. We explore the famous ‘fairy chimneys’, rock-cut churches and the spectacular underground city of Kaymakli. From the Ihlara Valley we begin a 4-day trek through the unique landscape of Cappadocia. We follow little-known trails past orchards and vineyards to traditional villages. Along the way we experience Turkish hospitality and enjoy local cuisine.

ITINERARY


Day 1 Fly to Istanbul. Day 2 Istanbul Tour the city including Sultanahmet and the Blue Mosque. Take an overnight sleeper train to the city of Konya. Days 3/4 Ihlara Valley and Kaymakli Explore the valley – famous for its caves painted with religious frescoes by Byzantine priests. Hike along the valley from the town of Selime to Ihlara village. Explore the ancient underground city of Kaymakli. Drive to Avanos and walk through the famous ‘fairy chimneys’ to Cayagil. Days 5/8 Cappadocia Spend four days trekking through the unique landscapes of Cappadocia. Based in Goreme, follow little-known trails past orchards and vineyards to traditional villages. Day 9 Drive to Kayseri. Fly via Istanbul to the UK.
