We begin this trip in the rugged landscapes of Sumatra; we meet the friendly Orangutans of Bohorok rehabilitation centre and visit the tribal communities in the Karo highlands. On Java we admire Borobodur’s magnificent temples, climb to the crater of Mount Ijen and see the sun rise over volcanoes at dawn. Finally we cross the Bali Straight to Lovina where we can relax on black volcanic sands.

Days 1/2 Overnight flight to Medan (Sumatra). Day 3 Orangutans Tour the city of Medan and drive to Bukit Lawang. Visit the Bohorok Orang utan rehabilitation centre. Day 4 Batak villages Visit the villages of the Karo Batak tribe in the volcanic landscape of the Karo highlands. Explore the vibrant market at Brastagi. Days 5/6 Samosir Island Meet the Toba Batak people of Samosir Island. Day 7 Sipirok Drive to Sipirok via Lumban Julu, a village famous for Ulos weaving. Days 8/10 Bukittinggi Cross the equator to the beautiful hillside-town of Bukittinggi, the centre of the matrilineal Minangkabau culture. Days 11/12 Yogyakarta From the vibrant cultural centre of Java visit the Kraton Palace, Prambanan Temple and the UNESCO-listed temples of Borobodur. Day 13 Solo Visit the Mangkunagaran palace in Solo. Travel to Blitar. Day 14 Kalibaru Explore coffee and spice plantations. Day 15 Mount Ijen Climb to the Crater Lake on Mount Ijen for dawn views over Java. Days 16/17 Lovina Beach Catch a ferry across the Bali Strait to Lovina.
