BORNEO
Traditional longhouse Stay with the once fierce headhunters of Borneo where you’ll be assured of a friendly welcome… join them in their daily chores, learn how they live and get to know the Headman of the longhouse over a glass of rice wine, or two. They may even teach you one of their traditional dances!
Orang-utans
The Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre was set-up to rehabilitate orphaned baby orang-utans. It gives you the opportunity to watch these amazing creatures up-close in their natural habitat. This is a fantastic experience.
Borneo is a haven for those who love the natural world. It boasts an amazing bio-diversity, pristine rainforests and South East Asia’s highest peak, Mt. Kinabalu. One of the main attractions is the orang-utans, loveable creatures that you can experience close at hand.
BORNEO Suggested itinerary
This bespoke journey features some of our favourite spots in Borneo. You can choose to take our destination experts’ recommendations and travel just as you see the itinerary here, or contact us to add your own special touches – maybe adding some of the experiences or accommodation options above.
Day 1: Depart UK Depart the UK on your flight to Borneo.
Day 2: Orang-utan sanctuary Arrive in Sandakan, and make the short drive to Sepilok and the orang-utan sanctuary. Sepilok is home to the largest of the world’s three orang-utan rehabilitation centres. We plan to visit the centre in time for feeding.
Day 3: Sukau Free time for jungle walks. In the afternoon we drive to Sukau. The freshwater swamp forest around Sukau is home to myriad wildlife such as tree snakes and birds. This evening enjoy a sunset river journey.
Day 4: In Sukau; visit ox-bow lake On our cruise this morning, we may see crocodiles warming themselves in the morning sun. Later in the afternoon, as the sun starts to go down on our second boat cruise, we hope to spot the long-nosed proboscis monkeys.
Day 5: Kinabalu National Park
Today we head to Kinabalu National Park, stopping off at the famous Poring Hot Springs. Look out for the Rafflesia - the largest flower in the world, it produces a red bloom over one metre wide which lasts for just one week.
Day 6: Start your Kinabalu climb This morning we make an early start. Walk or trek to reach a mountain hostel surrounded by magnificent scenery. The lower part of the trek is through dense tropical vegetation and mist- shrouded rainforest.
Day 7: Summit Mt. Kinabalu Rise at 03.00 and trek to the summit for sunrise. The view from the top of Mt. Kinabalu (4095m) is exceptionally fine as we watch the sun rising over the misty jungle lowlands.
Day 8: Kota Kinabalu
Known locally as KK, Kota Kinabalu is a burgeoning city with a blend of Malays, Europeans and Chinese: the result is a unique mixture of architecture, culture, high technology and ancient traditions.
Day 9: Return to the UK Transfer to the airport for your return flight.
