WINTER CYCLING ON MOROCCO’S KASBAH TRAIL

The climate in Southern Morocco is ideal for this active winter break. Surrounded by the Jebel Sahro mountain range we cycle through kasbahs, tribal villages and cool oases in the Draa Valley. We ride camels to a nomad desert camp in the Sahara, explore the rock formations of the Todra Gorge and ride through Berber countryside in the High Atlas.

ITINERARY
Day 1 Fly to Marrakech. Day 2 High Atlas Stop at the famous kasbah in Ait Benhaddou on the drive to Ouarzazate. Day 3 Draa Valley Surrounded by the Jebel Sahro mountain range, cycle from Ouarzazate into the Draa Valley, passing date palms, ancient kasbahs and ksours (fortified villages). Days 4/5 Sahara Ride through the desert towards Erfoud, visiting the local market at Rissani. Take a camel ride to the vast sand dunes of Erg Chebbi and stay overnight in a nomad camp in the great Sahara. Day 6 Todra Gorge Take a walk through one of the region’s most impressive rock formations. Visit El Kelaa Mgouna – renowned for its rose-water – and drive through the scenic ‘Valley of the 1000 Kasbahs’. Day 7 High Atlas and Marrakech Driving into the High Atlas, take an exhilarating ride downhill from the Tizi n’Fedrhate Pass (2180m) through Berber fields and villages. Drive to the ‘Red City’ of Marrakech and spend time exploring the maze of alleyways in the souks and the celebrated ‘circus’ of Djemma-el-Fna Square. Day 8 Fly to the UK.

Day 1 Fly to Ouarzazate. Day 2 Southern Oasis Descend into the fertile Draa Valley where palms groves and ksours (fortified villages) line the route. Travel to Zagora – known as the ‘Gateway to the Sahara’. Drive to Tamegroute village and on to oasis camp. Enjoy a traditional Berber dinner and watch the sun set over the desert. Optional camel safari. Days 3/4 Wilderness of the Sahara Cross the baked black rock of Jebel Bani and follow desert sand tracks to explore the palm groves and ksour of Mhamid. Drive through the arid landscape of the Sahara in search of the M’Hazil sand desert of Chegaga – home to the highest dunes in this region of Morocco. Enjoy a nature walk to search for signs of desert-dwelling animal, bird and insect life. Sleep under the stars. Return to Ouarzazate via Foum Zguid. Day 5 Fly to the UK.
