An opportunity to explore some of the lesser-travelled stretches of the ancient silk routes, this pioneering tour journeys west from the vibrant Uzbek capital of Tashkent, through little-known Turkmenistan, to reach the Iranian metropolis of Tehran. Moving from Central Asia into Persia, we encounter fascinating cities, rich archaeological sites and unique and contrasting cultures.


ITINERARY


Day 1/2 Overnight flight to Tashkent. Enjoy an afternoon sightseeing tour. Days 3/4 Samarkand Explore the city and admire fine Islamic architecture and ancient buildings. Visit Registan Square, mosques, madrassahs and mausoleums. Days 5/6 Bokhara Explore the main sites and wander in the alleyways and courtyards of the Old Quarter. Days 7/8 Ancient Merv Cross into Turkmenistan and spend time at the ruins of the ancient oasis city on the historical silk route. Days 9/11 Ashgabat Explore the city’s many monuments and ancient sites. Visit a stud farm where Akhalteke horses are bred. Days 12/13 Mashhad Cross into Iran and explore the holy Shia city of Mashhad. Visit the sacred shrine of Emam Reza. Take an overnight train to Isfahan. Days 14/16 Isfahan Discover the famous sites of the city: including Cheheltum Palace, Imam Square, Lotfollah Mosque and Ali Qapu Palace. There is an optional visit to the Vank Cathedral and the Si-o-Seh Bridge. Days 17/18 Tehran Drive to the capital. See the decadent Golestan Palace and the fascinating Museum of Ancient Iran. Shop in the city’s bustling bazaars. Day 19 Fly to the UK.
