Take a journey back in time on this historical trip to the Peloponnese region of Greece. We explore the magnificent ancient ruins of Olympia and discover the Byzantine ghost town of Mystras. We visit the Acropolis in Athens, the Temple of Apollo in Delphi and the Kingdom of Agamemnon in Mycenae. We can also enjoy boat trips and relax on the Mani Peninsula.
ITINERARY
Day 1 Fly to Athens. Day 2 Athens Take a walking tour of the capital including the Plaka area and guided tour of the Acropolis. Days 3/4 Nafplion Enjoy an orientation tour of the coastal town including the first Greek parliament. Explore Epidavros, home to one of the best-preserved ancient Greek theatres (4th century). Optional beach walks around the headland. Walk to the 18th century Palimidi Fortress. Day 5 Mycenae Visit the hilltop ruins of Mycenae, once the palace of King Agamemnon. Days 6/7 Mani Peninsula Based in Areopolis we discover fishing ports, fortified villages and beautiful beaches. Optional walk to Diros Caves or a day-trip to Monemvassia – known as the ‘Greek Gibraltar’. Days 8/9 Pylos Explore the Byzantine ghost town of Mystras. Day 1 Fly to Khania. Day 2 Khania Explore the old, walled, harbour town before heading into the mountains. Public bus to the Omalos Plateau, where traditional goat-herds tend their flocks. Day 3 Mount Gingilos Walk in the White Mountains and enjoy views over the Samaria Gorge. Option to climb Mount Gingilos. Day 4 Samaria Gorge Hike through Europe’s longest gorge to the old fishing village of Ayia Roumeli and take the ferry to Loutro. Day 5 Loutro Explore the tiny coastal village – only accessible by sea or on foot. Optional walks include hiking in the Aradena Gorge. Day 6 Preveli Catch the ferry to Khora Sfakion.
