Subaru BRZ
The BRZ is a bit of an anomaly in the Subaru range, but a fun one for sure. This two-door, four- seat coupe was co-developed with Toyota and is manufactured by Subaru. BRZ stands for Boxer engine (it’s a fl at-four 2.0-litre petrol design, with 200hp), Rear-wheel drive and Z for zenith. Toyota’s version, called the GT86, is almost identical. The BRZ is brilliant to drive, but it’s a very focused machine, so only those that really adore driving will bother with it and put up with its compromises, namely unrefi ned manners and poor practicality. Still, on the right road in the right conditions, it certainly paints a smile on your face.

Subaru Levorg
The Subaru Levorg makes no sense at all to the Irish market. It’s a mid-sized estate with four-wheel drive, an automatic transmission and a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine under the deeply scooped bonnet. And yet, we’ll admit that it’s a very likeable car to spend any time in. It has clearly been engineered by car enthusiasts, so it’s agile and good to drive, if not particularly fast. It is smooth and beautifully made, though, and while not as large as many cars available for the same price, it has a decent enough boot and rear seat space. The Levorg’s cabin is the best that Subaru makes right now and the single trim level off ered is well-specifi ed too. Now, we realise that the Subaru Outback is not to all tastes. A few generations back it started life as the Legacy Outback, a more rugged version of the Legacy Estate with a higher ride height and a few other bits and pieces to suit more off -road ability. It was a hit for Subaru so it eventually started marketing it as a standalone car and now it’s priced as an alternative to traditional large SUVs. Given how in vogue the SUV is, you’d expect us to dismiss a mere estate as old-fashioned, but there’s something really quite compelling about the restrained appearance and serious off -road ability of the Outback. That and the fact that it should never let you down in terms of reliability. Going against it are a relatively dowdy interior (if very spacious), high emissions and a high purchase price.
