There’s an estate for those needing greater space, the four-wheel drive All-Terrain model with pseudo-SUV styling and AMG variants in E 43 or full-fat E 63 guises, though it’s as a diesel estate or saloon where the E-Class sells in volume. Deservedly so.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class


This second generation A-Class hatchback is aimed directly at rivals like Audi’s A3 and the BMW 1 Series. Sharp looks outside turn heads, while the interior has the fi t and fi nish you’d expect for something wearing the three-pointed star on its grille. The trade-off for those looks and neat interior is a cabin that isn’t the most spacious out there, likewise the boot isn’t huge. There’s plenty of choice though, meaning even smaller budgets should stretch to an A-Class, where the entry-level A 160 diesel and petrol models take the bulk of sales in Ireland. If you’ve got more money there are plenty of ways to spend it, right up to the sensationally quick A 45 AMG variant, which gains four-wheel drive and looks to match its considerable pace. The AMG Line trim apes those looks no matter what’s under the bonnet, and while the A-Class isn’t quite as fun to drive as its rivals it’s still an appealing, premium small car.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class


Mercedes-Benz describes its B-Class as a ‘sports tourer’, though the reality is it’s a premium take on the idea of a fi ve-seat compact MPV, with an upright driving position and space-effi cient cabin. Much of the interior is recognisable from the A-Class, which is fi ne as it’s nicely executed. Choose Easy-Vario-Plus from the options list to maximise the interior’s practicality with sliding rear seats and a dual-fl oored boot. The B-Class drives with competence rather than interest and it’s best sampled with one of the smaller diesel engines, mixing effi ciency with decent performance. It’s even better if you choose an automatic. Start ticking those option boxes and it can begin to look expensive, though, and the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is more fun to drive.
