OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Grand C4 Picasso Feel BlueHDi 120

Citroën C4 Cactus Citroën C4 Picasso/Grand C4 Picasso

Although we’ve grouped the two C4 Picasso siblings together there, they appeal to very diff erent buyers and that’s simply because the regular C4 Picasso has fi ve seats and the Grand C4 Picasso has seven. Thankfully Citroën didn’t just shoehorn an extra set of chairs into the boot of the standard car to make it ‘grand’, but instead redesigned the bodywork to accommodate the seating. A refresh at the end of 2016 brought the cabin bang up to date with modern graphics and a much-improved touchscreen interface, but some may fi nd the interior a little too unusual for their liking. Nonetheless, it’s well thought out, has loads of storage space and is very fl exible in terms of seat adjustability. It’s bright and airy too. On the road, both cars are comfortable and though there’s a solitary petrol option, the economical and smooth diesel will suit most MPV buyers better.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE C4 Cactus Flair BlueHDi 100

The launch of the C4 Cactus was a signal of intent from Citroën, letting the world know that it was focusing once more on innovation. It’s not that easy to pigeonhole the C4 Cactus. It’s a fi ve-door hatchback with raised ride height and a SUV-like appearance, but it can’t be had with four-wheel drive. Instead, it features lightweight construction and a space-effi cient interior to give buyers in this part of the market something else to think about. That cabin is worth focusing on. Few will like the fact that there are no sliding windows in the rear (reduces weight and cost while freeing up interior space, but still…), but you can’t help but smile at the wide and comfy front seats and the super-modern dashboard with its huge glovebox. We found the C4 Cactus to be

exceptionally good at traversing bumpy roads too.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE SpaceTourer Feel BlueHDi 150

Citroën Berlingo Multispace

You buy a car such as the Berlingo Multispace when practicality is the most important thing in the world to you. It’s based on Citroën’s Berlingo van, so it’s not quite as refi ned or good to drive as the company’s regular road cars, but that van profi le means loads of interior space. Not only is there a massive boot, but the seating in the back is made up of three individual chairs, which makes fi tting in three child seats a cinch. The outer two seats feature ISOFIX mountings too. What’s more, the rear is accessed via a sliding door on each side of the car, making life very easy no matter how crowded the car park. Citroën off ers just one variant of the Berlingo Multispace, powered by its proven 1.6-litre diesel engine.

Citroën SpaceTourer

The SpaceTourer is Citroën’s newest people carrier, and like the Berlingo Multispace, it’s based on one of the fi rm’s commercial vehicles. That should be no surprise given the boxy proportions. Obviously, they translate into a large interior space, and actually there are three diff erent body lengths available depending on your needs and budget, with seating for up to nine people on board. The seats slide and the backrests tilt and they’re all removable too. The SpaceTourer drives like a commercial vehicle, but a very modern one, with acceptable performance and refi nement, and it even holds the road in a decent manner, keeping occupants isolated from the worst of the surface underneath. Unsurprisingly, it’s diesel power only, in a variety of outputs - it’s worth going for the most powerful your budget allows to cope with heavier loads.
