Audi A5 Sportback
Making a more practical car out of a coupe might not sound like the easiest task to execute, but in the A5 Sportback Audi has done a tremendous job. The fi rst generation A5 Sportback was a huge hit globally, so the second time around it had to be even better. Its low, sleek design still aff ords its occupants decent amounts of room inside and its cabin refi nement is virtually unrivalled. It even drives well. The A5 Sportback features the same engine line-up as the two-door Coupe and Cabriolet models, ranging from 2.0-litre petrol and diesel options to a 354hp 3.0-litre V6 in the S5 model. On the practical side of things, boot space is a useful 480 litres and of course it is available in the usual SE, Sport and S line specifi cations.

Keen to reassert itself as the leader in the premium hatchback segment, Audi gave the A3 range a revamp in late 2016 with styling tweaks and new engines. Four body styles are available, from the four-door A3 Saloon and the four-seat A3 Cabriolet to the three-door hatch and the fi ve-door Sportback. The latter makes the most practical sense, which is why it’s the biggest seller. The interior fi nish of the A3 is to a very high standard irrespective of whether you choose from Attraction, SE, or S line specifi cations. seamlessly with smartphones, though if you like tech then you should specify the ‘Virtual Cockpit’, a TFT display that replaces the traditional instruments. Engine options include 1.6- and 2.0-litre TDI diesels, as well as 1.4-litre petrol. One of the newer additions that proves to be surprisingly good is the turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engine. Alternatively, there is the A3 e-tron, a plug-in hybrid model that combines a 1.4-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for up to 50km on electric power and low road tax. In contrast are the range-topping S3 and RS 3 versions, designed for high-performance thrills.
