Suzuki has always been known as a bit of an expert in small cars, and that reputation has been reinforced of late by the launch of a bevy of interesting new models. Most are petrol-powered and effi cient and best suited for a life in an urban area, though the Japanese company isn’t turning its back on SUVs either, with multiple options in the line-up to suit most needs.

Suzuki Baleno


Much like its smaller Celerio, Suzuki has managed to give the Baleno C-segment dimensions at a price that is closer to the segment below. This fi ve-seat hatchback is far removed from the Baleno of old and although its styling might not get pulses racing it is a car that doesn’t pretend to be something it isn’t. Its ordinariness aside, Suzuki has been generous with the standard equipment. In addition to the seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, there’s satnav, a reversing camera and full smartphone connectivity on every model.

While the equipment levels are good, the driving experience is even better. Talk of great chassis setup and engaging engines is usually reserved for more expensive models, but the Baleno has plenty to off er in these departments. The highlight is the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Called the ‘BoosterJet’, this small three-cylinder engine has more than enough low down power to keep the Baleno clipping along at a healthy pace while consuming just 4.5 litres/100km on the offi cial combined cycle. Falling into motor tax Band A3 adds to the Baleno’s strong value-for-money package.

There is simplicity to the Suzuki Celerio that earns it a place on anyone’s shopping list in the small car market. Clever features include rear doors that open up to 90 degrees for maximum access, making loading in a baby seat, for example, that bit easier. A boot capacity of 254 litres is good for the segment and the Celerio is also surprisingly big on interior space. Its high roof line allows for good headroom while rear passenger knee room is generous. Performance from the 998cc three-cylinder petrol engine is best described as ‘modest’, but once up to speed it motors along nicely. There is the option of an automatic transmission, but the fi ve-speed manual is considerably cheaper. Agility is the little Suzuki’s trump card around town, with what is one of the smallest turning circles in the segment. However, the steering, and in particular its lack of self-centring on the exit of corners, is a small blot on its copybook.

Suzuki Swift


The Swift is Suzuki’s off ering in the supermini, and although it goes up against some impressive competition, it still scores well. Its 1.2-litre petrol engine makes up for outright pace with good levels of fuel economy and tax-friendly emissions. It holds the road well and even though it is a tall car it doesn’t lean that much in the corners. It is inside the cabin that you see how Suzuki can sell it at the low price it does. When compared to other rivals the dashboard and plastics feel cheap, if hard wearing. The rear seats split 60/40 giving the 211-boot a chance to expand to 902 litres. Equipment levels don’t diff er substantially between GL and GLX, with the former featuring the majority of the same items as the higher grade.
