Alfa Romeo 4C


Not only is the 4C the jewel in Alfa’s crown, it is also one of the most involving driver’s cars on the market today. It does have its faults, namely the uncompromising suspension setup, lack of power steering and minimal creature comforts, which mean this won’t be as usable day-to-day as a Porsche Cayman, for example, though it is over 400kg lighter. The 1.7-litre four-cylinder engine produces 240hp and 350Nm of torque, the latter of which arrives at just 2,100rpm. That’s enough to slingshot the Alfa to 100kph in just 4.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 257kph. Despite its imperfections, the 4C is a highly addictive car that feels truly unique. From the cacophony of sound inside the carbon fi bre tub to the surge of turbocharged power this mid-engined Alfa Romeo is wonderfully raucous.

Not only is the Alfa Romeo 4C great fun to drive, it also sounds purposeful. So what better way to make the most of that than opt for the open-topped Spider version? Thanks to the 4C’s carbon tub there is no reduction in drivability despite the loss of the fi xed roof. Uneven surfaces can unsettle the 4C though,


making it a car that requires all of your attention. That more focused setup makes it less usable day-to-day than a Porsche Boxster, for example. If budget isn’t a limiting factor and you want something much more unique the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider will win over your heart.
