The Jeep name is so synonymous with off -road vehicles that many Irish people refer to all SUVs as ‘jeeps’. Despite that, the American brand has struggled to fi nd its feet on the Irish market for some time, as its large, rugged vehicles were shunned in favour of more car-like off erings from other manufacturers. Jeep, however, is fi ghting back and we expect to see a lot more from it in 2017.

Jeep Renegade
Some small SUVs seem pretty bland, but not the Jeep Renegade – it’s brimming with character. It may look almost like a real- world version of a Jeep from a Pixar movie, but beneath the fun styling is a capable car that is virtually guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Despite its small tyre print, its tall, boxy design gives the Renegade reasonably good levels of interior space, though it best suits those who don’t regularly carry a lot of
passengers. As you might expect from a Jeep, the interior looks and feels hard wearing, but the Limited and Trailhawk models are quite luxurious. Jeep has a solid range of engines in the Renegade line-up, ranging in power from 110- to 170hp and with both automatic and front- or all-wheel drive transmissions available. It is a tad expensive given its overall size, but this car oozes appeal and style making it stand out from others in the segment.

The Jeep Cherokee is, shall we say, opinion dividing in its appearance. That seven-slot signature Jeep grille is overshadowed by squinty headlights that you will either love or hate. Beyond that, it continues the chunky image the American company has always done so well, though it has had its edges softened to appeal to more European buyers. There is a competent all-wheel drive system and even a nine-speed automatic, though we consider the six-speed manual front-wheel drive version to be more than enough for most drivers. It delivers a comfortable ride and while it might not be as sharp in the corners and some rivals, it provides a smooth ride. Inside, it is roomy and benefi ts from a 591-litre boot if you can manage with front-wheel drive only.

Jeep Grand Cherokee
If you like your SUVs to consist of a prime slice of Americana, then the Jeep Grand Cherokee will be right up your street. The interior feels well-made and you do get a reasonably well-equipped package, including full leather upholstery, but against similarly priced eff orts from the likes of Audi, BMW and even Volvo, it lacks the kind of quality expected. Two engines are off ered, though both struggle to match either the performance or refi nement of its rivals. The 3.0-litre diesel V6 produces 250hp and is fi tted with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It is slick in its operation but with emissions placing the Grand Cherokee in tax Band E, this is not a sensible choice. And if you want to really make a big impression (including on your wallet) there’s a 6.4-litre V8 Grand Cherokee SRT available. It sounds raucous and with 486hp on tap it can also cover ground at a serious pace, but be prepared for heinous fuel consumption and motor tax.
