BMW i8
Little else on the road in Ireland today gets as much attention as the BMW i8 does. From its dihedral doors to the fact that it can then pull away in total silence thanks to its electric motors, it’s as dramatic as supercars costing fi ve times the price. Just as impressive is the fact that its battery power is supplemented by a modest 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. Not that it limits performance, as 0-100kph takes just 4.4 seconds. With extensive use of carbon fi bre in its construction, the i8 is certainly a unique car. Buyers can also add laser headlights for exceptional levels of illumination at night, although these do come with an eye-watering price tag. Offi cially, it uses 2.1 litres/100km, but you will need to be exceptionally well behaved to achieve that in the real world.

Few other electric vehicles can come close to rivalling just how well the i3 drives. The small electric car comes either as battery only (BEV) or with a range-extending engine (REX) that is used to charge the battery rather than propel the car. For 2017 BMW has added a higher capacity battery that will extend driving range to a claimed 300 kilometres on a single charge. Its quirky looks won’t appeal to everyone, but they do make the i3 stand out on the street. Shame that the rear-hinged back doors cannot open without fi rst opening the front doors, as that can be awkward in a confi ned space. The i3 is on the expensive scale for electric vehicles, but spending even a short time in it soon lets you appreciate the higher price as it is a joy to drive.

In its current 7 Series BMW has redefi ned what a luxury saloon should be capable of doing. Gone is the bloated appearance of previous generations and part of its slimmed down look and weight loss is due to the car’s innovative ‘Carbon Core’, which sees the super strong yet lightweight material used in a number of structural areas to reduce weight. Whether you choose the standard or long wheelbase the 7 Series’ cabin is sheer luxury. You barely hear the outside world as you cruise along, and should the mood take you, this large luxury car can still show a clean set of rear wheels to traffi c thanks to its impressive handling. Despite the extensive list of optional extras, for what you get, the 7 Series is relatively good value for money, too.
