OUR PICK OF THE RANGE S60 D3 Auto ES


Volvo S60


A small-ish executive saloon, sitting below the normal contenders, the Volvo S60 is more A3 Saloon in stature than A4. It’s among the older models in Volvo’s range, though the attractive style, understated image and fi ne interior hold appeal. Nonetheless, there are better, more memorable cars to buy and own at this price point. As with everything it sits alongside in the Volvo showroom, safety is a high priority, though Volvo puts a lot of emphasis on the S60’s sharp driving dynamics, something it fails to live up to. If you want a comfortable, unfussy saloon though it’s diffi cult to fault, though. It’s off ered in the familiar ES, SE, SE Lux and R-Design SE trim levels and engine choices you’ll fi nd elsewhere in the Volvo range. The SE benefi ts from Volvo’s Sensus Connect system with an uprated stereo and a seven-inch screen, though if you can live without that (we could) then the ES doesn’t feel like an entry- level off ering when looking at the list of standard equipment.


Volvo XC60


Volvo’s old role as family hauler for sensible families was transformed with the introduction of the XC90, and the smaller XC60 only widened that appeal further. With emphasis on comfort and practicality, it’s not as interesting to drive as many of its more overtly sporting rivals, but for many that’s a huge part of its appeal. If that’s the case, avoid R-Design, as it adds stiff er suspension, with little real gain in agility. There’s nothing wrong with how the XC60 drives, but it does focus on comfort. Only the D4 engine is off ered with four-wheel drive, though there are economy and emissions penalties for choosing it, so the front-wheel drive D3 models are likely to suit most buyers. Refi nement is good in all, though those diesel engines get a bit noisy if pushed. The interior feels very upmarket, while equipment levels are good, particularly relating to safety.

Volvo XC90


The fi rst Volvo XC90 soldiered on for years, being the big SUV choice for families not wanting to bow to an MPV for seven-seat user friendliness. Its replacement retains that status, its seats folding with all the space effi ciency of fl at packed furniture, delivering your kids in style on the school run. It marks something of a renaissance for the fi rm, both in its exterior design and its more advanced, modern interiors, as the centre of the dash is dominated by an easy-to-operate touch-screen that’s iPad-like in both its size and ease. Being among Volvo’s newest models the equipment list is extensive, the safety aids including City Safety with cyclist detection, front collision warning, lane departure warning, driver alert and road sign recognition. Momentum trim has everything you could possibly want, but Inscription and R-Design allow you to spend more. We wouldn’t recommend them – likewise the T8 Twin Engine hybrid – as the best XC90 is the front-driven D4.
