Volvo, though very Swedish in its philosophy and design, is nowadays owned by a Chinese company. That’s great news in terms of fi nance to invest in new technology and models, and they’re coming thick and fast. While safety is still at the core of Volvo, it is also showing its rivals how to do things from a design perspective of late.

Volvo S90 The S90 replaces the somewhat unremarkable S80 as Volvo’s executive saloon, and the S90 is better positioned to rival obvious German competitors like the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Unlike them, Volvo isn’t so concerned about sporting appeal, instead concentrating on comfort, refi nement and style, something it has achieved very successfully indeed. There’s the now signature Volvo interior with its tablet-like operating system in the
centre of the dash. It, like the rest of the interior, works intuitively. Indeed, if there’s a calmer car in the class, we’ve yet to experience it, as the S90 is about as fi ne a place to spend time as you’ll fi nd. It’s not particularly quick, nor is either of its diesel engines particularly sparkling, but you’ll be too comfortable to care, and they do the basics well enough. A very appealing car, simply because it’s not one of its rivals, the S90 underlines Volvo’s current form beautifully.

The entry point into the Volvo range, the V40 defi nes what the brand represents within the wider marketplace. It’s not quite at the must-have premium levels of Germanic rivals like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, but not far from it. Attention to detail and quality permeates the V40, helping it feel solid. The interior execution is simple and nicely designed, too, though the boot’s not vast in comparison to some rivals’. There’s plenty of choice, with a range of four-cylinder turbocharged engines badged D2, D3 and D4 for the diesels and T2 and T5 for the petrol alternatives. There’s all-wheel drive on the T5; R-Design spec adds racier looks; and Cross Country trim adds ‘landowner’ design. All drive commendably enough, though the diesels can be a little gruff sounding. Standard equipment is
decent, particularly relating to safety kit, where all V40s come with Volvo’s automatic braking City Safety system.

Volvo V60
The V60 is a Volvo estate, only not quite in the traditional chest of drawers swallowing sense - the boot is actually smaller than that in something like a Volkswagen Golf Estate. The draw is its appearance, the prestige and the simple delight of an interior that both works with the simplicity of Fisher Price yet feels very grown up at the same time. Safety is a priority, so standard equipment on all includes Volvo’s City Safety autonomous braking system. The range features ES, SE, SE Lux, R-Design SE and off -road aping Cross Country trims, and the engine options largely follow that of the S60 saloon, with four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines on off er. They’re all respectably economical, with only the performance orientated T3 and T5 models featuring high emissions. The plug-in hybrid diesel ‘twin-engine’ looks good by the numbers, but doesn’t prove so clever in reality.
