OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Land Cruiser Business
Toyota RAV4
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE RAV4 Luna Sport 2.0 D-4D
The very fi rst Toyota RAV4 was arguably one of the fi rst crossovers, though it was never labelled as such. It brought road car manners and off -road ability and looks together in one package. The RAV4 has evolved considerably since then into a much more grown up vehicle with its alloy wheels fi rmly in the SUV camp. Hence Toyota’s need to launch the C-HR to compete with crossovers. It is off ered in fi ve-door, fi ve-seat format only, though there are diesel and hybrid powertrains - the latter adopted from Lexus, no less. Nonetheless, that hybrid model only really works well if you’re confi ned to town, where it’s quiet and effi cient. The diesel is best for use on the open road.
Toyota Land Cruiser
Although the Toyota Land Cruiser can be bought in serious luxury formats with an interior, space and equipment to rival such cars as the Range Rover, its refi nement and driving manners don’t quite live up to that billing. It is at its best in a more restrained specifi cation to be used as a comfortable, bomb-proof workhorse. Hence, it’s exceptionally good at towing and its four-wheel drive system should let it go anywhere you dare to take it. On the road, it remains comfortable, but it does wallow about a bit. There are short and long wheelbase body styles (three- and fi ve-door) and a single lusty 2.8-litre diesel engine. Buy it and use it exclusively through a business and it makes some sense, but not very much as a private motorist.
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE GT86 manual
RChoiceecommended Editor’s Toyota GT86
The GT86 is a delightful juvenile distraction from the rest of the rather mature Toyota line-up. It’s a small, low-set two-door coupe with laughably small rear seats. Power is from a 2.0-litre petrol engine co-developed with Subaru, sitting down low and far back in the car for ideal weight distribution. It produces 200hp, which is sent via a fantastic

six-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels. This car is all about driving, and though the lack of turbocharging means you need to rev the engine to extract its full performance, that’s all part of the appeal. Admittedly, not everyone wants such a thing, but those that love driving will really get the GT86. It has been improved and updated for 2017, as well.
