In a class dominated by relatively dowdy styling the Mazda6 is a stand-out design, which is enough to ensure that, even against premium rivals, it gets a lot of attention. To drive it’s similarly appealing with a chassis that brings comfort and agility. If you ignore the 2.0-litre petrol engine at the entry point in the line-up, as most will, the Mazda6 is powered by a 2.2-litre

turbodiesel with 150hp. That output rises to 175hp if you choose the automatic transmission, but the leap in emissions makes that a less desirable option. Like the exterior, the interior is nicely fi nished, there’s plenty space and the base Executive specifi cation comes with all you really need as standard, including Mazda’s MZD Connect system and air conditioning.


Mazda3 Mazda2


The fi rst rung on the Mazda ladder is a good one; the Mazda2 is an attractive supermini that’s good to drive. It feels light, accurate and, crucially, fun; given the choice of keys for the Mazda, a Corsa, Yaris or Polo, it’s the Mazda we’d be taking for the sheer pleasure of driving it. However, while newer rivals have effi cient small capacity turbo engines the Mazda2 makes do with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit. It needs revs to go, and while that can be enjoyable, it’s not as eff ortless around town at lower speeds. There’s a diesel off ered on top spec versions, though they’re pricey. The interior remains smart, and space inside is decent.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Mazda3 1.5d Executive


Available in fi ve-door hatchback or four-door saloon body styles, the Mazda3 line-up was moderately revised for 2017. The diff erences aren’t immediately apparent, but as it was already the sharpest looking car in the relatively conservative C-segment, that’s no bad thing. Nonetheless, from Executive through Executive SE, GT and Platinum, all versions come with a decent level of standard equipment. It isn’t only good looks that help the Mazda3 stand out; to drive, it’s right up there with the best, with supple suspension bringing a fi ne ride and accurate, light steering. The engines are obviously tuned more for economy than thrills, the 1.5 diesel delivering the best combination of economy and emissions, making the 2.2 diesel and petrol choices all but redundant.
