Volkswagen is one of the most successful car brands in Ireland and indeed across Europe. That’s spearheaded by its Golf model, which gets an update this year to keep it fresh. The German company makes everything from city car to MPV and crossover. We expect to see plenty more SUVs from the fi rm in the coming years, plus a real focus on electric car technology.

If you fancy a plug-in hybrid, there is the Golf GTE while the eGolf off ers full electric power with an increased range for 2017. For the ultimate in performance there is the all-wheel drive Golf R.
Volkswagen up!
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE move up! fi ve-door 75hp
It might be the smallest car that Volkswagen currently produces, but the up! has all the same quality found in the company’s larger cars. Updated for 2017, the up! has refreshed looks and some new colour combinations. Inside, a new method of smartphone integration enables satellite navigation and a more detailed trip computer. Although small the up! does handle well, especially concerning ride quality. With little separating the 60- and 75hp versions of the turbocharged three- cylinder petrol engines on price, the latter makes for the wiser buy. Topping off the range is a new 90hp version, which does give the up! even more poke but makes it that bit more expensive.
Volkswagen Polo

Even though the Volkswagen Polo in its current guise has been around for many years, it remains one the best all-round cars in the segment. Its looks still ape that of its more successful big brother, the Golf, and with models in the upper end of the range have an interior that is just as high quality. It has good amounts of interior room, with 280 litres of boot space and decent rear legroom, though we would recommend choosing the fi ve-door over the three-door for convenience. While there is the usual mix of petrol and diesel engines, the hidden gem of the range is the BlueGT that delivers a punchy 150hp with modest fuel consumption and low emissions.
