BMW has long traded on its image as purveyor of high-end cars that reward the keen driver. In fairness, most of its models live up to that, but to keep with the times BMW has had to introduce more SUVs and even front-wheel drive people carriers of late. Thankfully they’re all good to drive and the German company leads the pack when it comes to electric mobility.

BMW 5 Series
The arrival of the all-new seventh generation 5 Series in 2017 is big news for BMW. With clear design infl uences from the larger 7 Series, the new car is a sensible evolution of the outgoing model. It is marginally larger, too, but crucially it is some 100kg lighter, to the benefi t of performance, dynamics and effi ciency. Inside, the dashboard features a 10.25-inch infotainment screen that can be fi tted with
gesture control, meaning you don’t even have to touch it. Other features on off er include a larger head-up display system and built-in Wi-Fi. Numerous engine choices include a 2.0-litre diesel to create the 520d that proves so popular with business and fl eet users. Petrol engines of varying performance levels are also available as is a plug-in hybrid model. The 5 Series Touring estate will be introduced later on in 2017.

The 1 Series represents entry to BMW ownership, and it stays true to the brand’s values by handling keenly, helped by its rear-wheel drive layout. Rear passenger space isn’t overly generous in comparison to front-wheel drive rivals, and boot capacity is only average. Both three- and fi ve-door models are available across three trim grades, while effi cient diesel and petrol engines ranging in size from 1.5- to 2.0-litre off er a good spread of performance. Topping off the range is the M140i, a 3.0-litre hot hatch that puts the BMW’s rear-wheel drive transmission to good use. Adding security for year-round motoring, the 1 Series is also available with all-wheel drive, but only on the fi ve-door model.

BMW 2 Series Active Tourer/Gran Tourer
The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is the company’s fi rst front-wheel drive car and its fi rst MPV. It uses a traditional fi ve-door hatchback confi guration, but has a taller roof to allow for greater space inside. A larger seven-seat model, called the 2 Series Gran Tourer, completes the MPV range, with a boxier shape at the back. Other than the BMW badge and associated refi nement, the Active Tourer and Gran Tourer off er little more than most other MPVs. The four-cylinder petrol engines, in particular, suit the Active Tourer well, but if you want to avail of BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive, you will have to choose the more powerful 2.0-litre diesel engine with automatic transmission. It is also possible to have a plug-in hybrid version of the Active Tourer that can off er battery-only driving of up to 38km.
