Mazda MX-5

Put simply, the MX-5 is a sports car sensation, rightly referred to as an icon. It has stayed largely true to its simple, light and fun concept since the very fi rst one was introduced in 1989. While it’s not particularly fast, the reward is in how it drives, with rich feedback through the controls from the moment you get in. It’s inexpensive, too, and Mazda keeps the trim levels simple by only off ering two. We can’t imagine why you’d spend the extra on the GT version for things like automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, as they’re not necessary on such a purist machine. Later in 2017, the roadster model will be joined by the MX-5 RF, with a folding hardtop. Nonetheless, when it comes to the MX-5, it’s at its best at its simplest.

Mazda CX-3

A compact SUV exhibiting Mazda’s usual focus on sharp looks and good driving characteristics, the CX-3 shot right to the top of the class for its attention-grabbing design alone. The CX-3 is largely based on the Mazda2, which means it’s keen in the corners, despite its loftier suspension. That link to its supermini relation does mean it’s not that spacious, though. Most CX-3s are front-wheel drive, as four-wheel drive is only off ered on the top-spec model (as is an automatic transmission), and at a price. The CX-3’s engine choices follow that of the 2, so there’s a 1.5 diesel and a 2.0-litre petrol for those that don’t plan on travelling outside city limits.

Mazda CX-5

The CX-5 isn’t Mazda’s fi rst SUV, but it’s unquestionably its best. From the start it was a head- turner, but a signifi cant restyle for 2017 means it’s even sharper looking than ever. That it’s enjoyable to drive is a bonus, even if there’s a trade-off for its agility in terms of refi nement. There’s a neat interior with acceptable, if not class- leading space, while the infotainment system is excellent, as is the suite of standard safety equipment. Engines on off er are the usual Mazda fare, which means a 2.0-litre petrol as an entry choice, with the 2.2-litre diesel being the volume seller. It’s possible to specify that diesel with four-wheel drive and an automatic transmission, but the CX-5 makes most sense as a front-wheel drive model in Executive trim.
