Although there’s a lot of love for the Jaguar brand around the world, it still doesn’t make anywhere near as many cars as the big three German premium manufacturers. That looks to be set to change though as the British company is clearly on a new model spree, starting with its core saloons and expanding into SUVs, fi nally.

Jaguar F-Pace


The F-Pace is the Jaguar’s fi rst ever SUV. It’s a good one, too, as Jaguar has infused its SUV with sporting genes, making it among the most appealing cars in its class to drive. It’ll manage going off -road, but the F-Pace’s natural environment is on the blacktop. Good looks defi ne it too, and it looks more like a tall estate rather than a traditionally boxy SUV. The interior off ers great space and while the dash and


instrumentation are Jaguar’s best yet, they’re not quite as slick as those from some premium rivals. The engine line-up includes 3.0-litre petrol and diesel options, but the vast majority will be powered by a 2.0-litre diesel. Make sure you specify AWD and an auto. Do that and you won’t be disappointed, though you’ll want Prestige trim for leather and must-have LED daytime running lights.

Jaguar XE


The Jaguar XE counts among its diffi cult rivals the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4. The Teutonic predictability of that trio is usurped by Jaguar’s focus on design, and there is some welcome frivolity to the British off ering. The start button pulses at the same rate of a jaguar cat, apparently, while the automatic gear selector rises up theatrically out of the console. There are other engine options (and the choice of four-wheel drive), but the 2.0-litre diesel is the only one worth considering in reality, and it’s possible to have it with sub-100g/km emissions in manual guise. The eight-speed automatic doesn’t impact too much on economy, so it’s worth paying extra for the convenience it brings, plus its likely higher trade-in value down the line.

Jaguar XJ


With its all-aluminium construction, a uniquely bold style and a sporting focus, the Jaguar XJ is a real departure from the luxury saloon norm. It makes a statement then, but one that’s got real appeal, particularly from the driver’s seat. The engines encompass everything from a 3.0-litre V6 diesel to a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol that’s got supercar-rivalling pace, and the XJ is available in standard or long-wheelbase forms, bringing plenty of choice to well-heeled luxury car buyers. The reality here is tiny sales, and of those the majority use a 3.0-litre diesel engine. Its performance is more than adequate, even if the effi ciency it delivers can’t match its German rivals. Hence the XJ is beginning to reveal its age. It’s a better car to drive than be driven in due to fi rm suspension and a relatively cramped rear passenger compartment, which restricts demand from the chauff eur industry.
