Mercedes-Benz SLC
Mercedes-Benz’s badge changes have transformed the SLK into the SLC. It’s the same car though, with a proper hard top that stows away, mixing coupe-like cosiness with the ability to feel the wind in your hair. That makes the SLC a more useable all-year proposition than rivals like the Audi TT or Porsche Boxster. It’s not quite as overtly sporting to drive as either, even if it does look great. The AMG 43 version addresses that, but it’s a tiny player in the sports car market against its rivals. The SLC’s volume is rightly centred on the 250 d diesel and SLC 180 or SLC 200 petrol choices, where expectations for thrills aren’t so high. It’s a feel-good machine, despite its advancing age.
Mercedes-Benz SL
Like the S-Class, the SL is a mainstay in the Mercedes-Benz line-up, and regarded as among the very best two-seat roadsters in the world. The petrol-only range encompasses everything from six cylinders to 12, with AMG off ering incredible performance options in SL 63 and 65 guises, though the SL is at its most ‘sensible’ in SL 400 form, with a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine under its bonnet. Rivals are far reaching, from sports cars like the Porsche 911 to cruisers like BMW’s 6 Series Convertible. The SL trumps all by off ering a folding hardtop to allow it to be a coupe and convertible in one. That breadth of ability pretty much sums up the SL.
