Suzuki Vitara
When the current Suzuki Vitara arrived on the scene, it brought plenty of colour to the crossover market. Its vibrant palette of colours, both inside and out, complement the Vitara’s funky, stylish looks. The interior is spacious and comes with good levels of standard equipment including automatic air conditioning, electric windows all-round, Bluetooth and cruise control. Diff erent package options group together styling add-ons that are useful if you’re seeking to add more personalisation. Pitted against even the more established models in the segment the Vitara proves itself as a very competent all-round car. It demonstrates good body control and gives the driver plenty of feedback through the steering wheel. Also available with the 1.6-litre diesel engine is Suzuki’s AllGrip all-wheel drive transmission, which adds even more ability to tackle all kinds of conditions. While the diesel engine does fare better with regard to fuel economy, the 1.6-litre petrol engine doesn’t lag too far behind and there is little performance diff erence to separate the two. The sportier Vitara S model gains the company’s latest 1.4-litre BoosterJet petrol engine with the AllGrip transmission.
Suzuki SX4 S-Cross
Suzuki’s S-Cross has never really enjoyed the appeal of other crossovers, but that looks set to change with this revised model. Gone is the drooping front styling, and in its place is a bolder and more upright grille with stylish headlights. The result is a car with more character and a purposeful image. It wouldn’t be unfair to call Suzuki a budget brand, but it has still managed to cram a lot of nice features into the S-Cross. Its seven-inch colour touchscreen is easy to use and supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, for example, while the rest of the cabin now has better quality materials, and items such as a panoramic glass sunroof can be specifi ed. The elevated driving position makes getting in and out of the Suzuki easy, while on the move there’s a good view of the road ahead. Even on poorer roads, the S-Cross does an excellent job of soaking up surface imperfections. When it comes to engines, the 1.4-litre BoosterJet may seem like the obvious choice, but the smaller 1.0-litre unit performs surprisingly well and manages to deliver a good amount of performance for a car of this size.
