With smart looks and even smarter innovations inside, the Skoda Fabia represents one of the best value- for-money off erings in a segment that includes some very good cars. Available as either fi ve-door hatchback or estate, the Fabia provides plenty of room regardless of model. It has a simple, no-frills approach to its interior yet manages to carry that off without looking spartan. A 60/40 split folding rear seat can tumble to grow boot space from 330 litres to 1,150 litres, as well. Among the available engines are a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol with 60- or 75hp, a larger 1.2-litre petrol with 90- or 110hp and a 1.4-litre diesel with 90hp. All have similar emissions ratings, meaning all fall under the same motor tax band, so it’s more down to budget and preferences. Of the range, it is the 110hp 1.2-litre TSI petrol that suits the Fabia best, as it gains a six-speed manual transmission too. Finally, there is a sportier looking Monte Carlo model that adds items like black alloy wheels and a contrasting roof, but doesn’t increase performance any further. If space is a priority, then the Combi estate version will be of more interest, and buyers can choose the ScoutLine version of the estate that adds a more off -road themed appearance to the exterior.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Octavia 2.0 TDI DSG
The evergreen Octavia comes in for a mid-life update in 2017 that primarily sees the front of the car get some restyling to bear more of a resemblance to the new Kodiaq SUV. Away from that, the Octavia is still a very spacious car. Though it looks like a saloon, it is in fact a fi ve-door hatchback, though there’s also a Combi estate variant. For either driver or passenger, travelling in the Octavia is a comfortable and relaxing experience. This is thanks in part to the suspension setup and well-insulated cabin. While the Octavia may appear to focus on comfort and space, even the standard versions are capable of making light work of more challenging roads. There is quite a broad range of engines to choose from, too. One of the latest additions is a 1.0-litre petrol engine, and while that might seem small for a car of this size it does produce 115hp and is perky enough. For the best value for money and fuel economy, the 1.6-litre diesel with a manual gearbox makes the most sense, and you can also have this with an automatic transmission or all-wheel drive. One other card in the Octavia’s already strong hand is the RS brand, which comes in both diesel and petrol versions. With 184- and 230hp respectively these deliver excellent everyday performance without detracting from the Skoda’s refi nement. And like the rest of the range these too are available in estate and saloon formats, as well as front- and all-wheel drive.
