OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Optima Platinum

RChoiceecommended Editor’s Kia Optima

While this latest Kia Optima might not look all that diff erent to the older model, it has undergone subtle tweaks to keep its looks sharp. The more signifi cant changes are beneath the bodywork, where for a start the interior has been improved upon with better materials and new technology. All models feature a seven-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, air conditioning and cruise control. There is just the one engine available, Kia’s venerable 1.7-litre

four-cylinder diesel, and this has been refi ned further. Crucially there is no longer an emissions penalty when choosing the automatic transmission, which now falls under Band A4 (€200 a year). A further boost to the Optima line-up is the introduction of an estate called the Optima Sportswagon. Off ering up to 1,686 litres of boot space (with the rear seats folded) it is one of the sleeker looking estate cars on the market today.

Kia Carens

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Carens 1.7 EX

Stylish looks and a well-fi nished cabin are two main highlights of the Kia Carens. This seven-seat MPV easily fi ts into the average car parking space and drives smoothly with good levels of power from the engine and light steering. Importantly, it feels solid and well made. While it might not be the most exciting car to drive it does make driving feel very easy, which is what most buyers are likely to want. Among the useful features inside the Carens is that all fi ve rear seats individually fold, which off ers plenty of confi guration options depending on your passengers and their luggage. Even the front passenger seat can be folded fl at to help load bulkier items of cargo. Throughout the rest of the cabin are also numerous useful storage compartments.

Kia Niro

This is the fi rst Kia sold in Ireland to off er hybrid technology and does so via a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor, which is powered by a lithium-ion battery, though it doesn’t require plugging in to charge up the battery. Instead, it uses and regenerates energy while you drive, so you don’t need to do anything unusual with it. While it falls into the crossover category this is very much a road car. Compared to the Kia Sportage for example, the Niro is shorter and lower, but does have a longer wheelbase that boosts interior space. There’s seating for fi ve with good room and a boot that off ers 427 litres of space. With emissions of 88g/km the Niro attracts low annual motor tax and its buyer received a €1,500 SEAI grant at registration. If you do short journeys in urban areas the Niro should prove to be an economical car to run, but its hybrid system won’t work as effi ciently if you do a lot of motorway driving.
