Fiat 500X

Like the 500L, the 500X has little other than a general design theme in common with the retro Fiat 500, but, oddly, it’s built on a diff erent platform to the 500L too, instead sharing its mechanicals with the Jeep Renegade. That’s because the 500X is designed to be a crossover and can even be specifi ed with four-wheel drive. Few Irish buyers have a need for that, however, so most will stick with the front-wheel drive models, as they’re cheaper to buy and run. The line-up is split between the regular 500X and the more rugged looking Cross variants, which we particularly like. The 500X is good to drive, comfortable and fairly spacious inside without leading the class in any single area. Its engines are largely economical and there’s loads of choice too. Avoid the entry-level 1.6-litre petrol option and you can’t go too far wrong.

Fiat Tipo

Brand new for 2017 is the Fiat Tipo line-up, consisting of a fi ve-door hatchback and an estate. It competes in the C-segment class against the likes of the Kia cee’d and Hyundai i30 and though Fiat doesn’t want it to be seen as a ‘budget car’, it does like to say it’s a car for those on a budget. Hence, pricing is strong and the standard specifi cation is really generous. The Tipo itself is spacious and comfortable inside, modern in design if not particularly interesting and there’s plenty of choice in the range. The cheapest versions are powered by forgettable petrol engines, but there are effi cient diesels on off er too. Shame the latter are not a little quieter, but they are economical and cheap to tax. A four-door saloon version of the Tipo is also available.

Fiat Doblo

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Doblo Easy 1.6 MultiJet 120

Parents, until you’ve experienced a car with sliding side doors you don’t know what you’re missing. That’s one of the big selling points of Fiat’s relatively unknown Doblo, a compact MPV based on the underpinnings of Fiat’s small commercial vehicle off ering. Those van roots mean a large usable space inside and plenty of practical features, though it also means an awkward looking shape on the outside and road manners that are a cut below average. Still, it’s comfortable and the all-diesel line-up is relatively economical. Shame that the emissions are so high, though, as the motor tax will put many off .
