Opel Insignia
Since its launch, the Insignia has continued to be a huge seller for Opel, particularly among business and fl eet buyers. Its smart looks and choices of a four-door saloon, fi ve-door hatchback or estate mean there’s something to suit most buyers. One of the Insignia’s high points is its comfort on the move and refi nement. Using the same 1.6-litre diesel as the smaller Astra, the Insignia comfortably covers longer distances with ease. It doesn’t have the sharpest handling among its rivals, but that isn’t likely to be a prime concern among most users of this type of car. The days are numbered for this Insignia though, as an all-new, larger replacement model is due to be launched later in 2017 under the name of Insignia Grand Sport.

Opel Karl
Slotting in under the Corsa in the Opel range, the Karl is a small fi ve-door hatch that, in addition to being quite roomy inside, also drives well. The overall design is one that has been geared towards maximising space, which Opel has largely achieved. Seating for fi ve with generous amounts of headroom still leaves room for a 206-litre boot. Just the one 75hp 1.0-litre petrol engine is available in the Opel Karl, but this turbocharged three-cylinder unit propels the car along at a healthy pace when asked. Adding low emissions and an offi cial combined consumption fi gure of 4.3 litres/100km, the Karl becomes sensibly attractive. There is no shortage of competition in this segment of the market, though the Opel Karl is certainly at the sharper end of things.

Opel Mokka X
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Mokka X SC 1.6 CDTi
Although technically just an updated model, Opel reckoned enough had changed with its Mokka SUV to add an X onto the end. Going forward, all SUV-based Opel models will carry the X designation. Most noticeable changes to the exterior focus around the front, which gets a new grille and headlights, giving the Mokka X a more aggressive look. The line-up of engines is shared with many other Opel models, and the 136hp 1.6-litre CDTi diesel is proving to be among the best in the Mokka X. All-wheel drive is available, though for most people the front-wheel drive version will suffi ce for day-to-day driving. The interior has also been upgraded with mid-level SC grade getting a seven-inch touchscreen and range-topping Elite specifi cation a larger eight-inch unit.
