Fiat has confi rmed that the Qubo receives an update this year, which should bring with it a petrol option and a considerably upgraded interior with more up to date infotainment. The model range is likely to change too and we’re told that the entry-level price will come down. All that is good news, though we don’t expect the core vehicle to change too much and though it’s a curious mix of supermini and MPV, small families will soon fi nd that it’s a rather useful car. Twin sliding rear doors make it a cinch to get child seats in and out, regardless of where you park, and the Qubo is great at nipping around town - which is where a petrol engine would come in handy. On the negative side, while the huge tailgate acts as a shelter from rain, it requires a lot of space behind the car to open, and the boot within isn’t as big as you’d think. Quirky, but likeable overall.

Fiat 124 Spider
While the new Fiat 124 Spider unashamedly draws styling inspiration from the original of 50 years ago, it’s a bang up-to-date two- seat roadster that shares its platform with Mazda’s current MX-5. For now, the 124 Spider is off ered in Ireland with a single engine and gearbox, though we expect the line-up to expand in time with more power and an automatic transmission. Under that shapely bonnet is a turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol
engine producing 140hp. That’s channelled through a wonderfully direct six-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels in true traditional sports car fashion. Despite that, it’s a cinch to drive and highly engaging when you want it to be. The heater is powerful enough for you to drive with the (manually operated) roof retracted whenever it isn’t raining, too, to get the full experience. Best to go for bright colours inside and out to show it off at its best.
