Porsche 911


Porsche’s iconic sports car, the 911 might follow an archaic rear-engined layout, but the German fi rm’s persistence and engineering determination has perfected the 911 over its long existence. It also means it off ers four seats, except in the GT3. The Carreras all have 3.0-litre turbocharged engines with either 370hp in the Carrera or 420hp in the Carrera S. Adding to that choice is the option of rear- or four-wheel

drive, coupes or cabriolets, or, if you can’t make your mind up, the Targa, which does both, with a folding hardtop that’s a work of art. Then there’s the 911 Turbo with 540hp, or faster still 580hp Turbo S, and the more track orientated GT3 and GT3 RS if you’re after a more purist 911 experience. Plenty choice, but all are memorable and hugely quick and you can’t go wrong with a standard Carrera...

Porsche 718 Boxster


Want all the 718 Cayman’s balance, poise and performance, but the sun on your back (on the rare occasion it’s out)? Then the Porsche 718 Boxster is diffi cult to ignore. With the introduction of the 718 badge in 2016 came new engines and a sharper style. The new four-cylinder turbocharged engines might not deliver the sort of spine-tingling, high-rev character so loved by hardcore enthusiasts, but the numbers associated with them are diffi cult to ignore. All are fast, and easier to live with, too, the fl exibility the turbocharged engines bring making for a less frenetic drive. Still huge fun, though, regardless if you’ve opted for the 300hp standard car or the 350hp 718 Boxster S, in either manual or PDK paddle-shifted automatic. Drop the top and enjoy, as the 718 Boxster is still very much the car rivals aim to beat. None come close.


Porsche Panamera


The Panamera is a luxury saloon, but one that retains its Porsche DNA, which makes it the most sporting of its type. Now in its second generation, the Panamera might come with compromises in comparison to its more comfort-biased competition, but none of them manage to mix sports car feel and saloon car luxury so comprehensively. The balance is excellent and the steering sharp, while the performance on off er (from six-cylinder petrol and diesels through hybrids to the range-topping V8s in the Turbo and 4S Diesel) is never less than ample - and in the case of those V8 models extraordinary. There’s plenty of equipment and personalisation on off er, too. The Panamera is a diff erent take on luxury four-door motoring, but one that very much permeates the brand’s sporting focus. All new in 2016, it even looks elegant now, which only adds to its appeal.
