If you seek a mid-sized and economical car that comes in at an aff ordable price point, the SEAT Toledo will tick a lot of boxes for you. It may share much with its cousin, the Skoda Rapid, but SEAT has still crafted its style into the Toledo. It may be far from being an exciting car to drive, but it does score highly in the sensibility stakes. Thanks in part to its light construction and choices of frugal diesel and petrol engines, the Toledo can return some good fuel economy fi gures. Most impressive is the 1.4-litre TDI, which consumes just 3.4 litres/100km. There is a performance trade-off of course, but if aff ordable motoring is your thing, this won’t concern you. The sweet spot in the line-up is the 1.2-litre TSI petrol model; it’s smooth, quiet and surprisingly economical. The SE Advanced spec adds increased style to the car, too.
SEAT Leon
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Leon SE Select 1.2 TSI
The SEAT Leon is one of the best-looking cars in the highly competitive C-segment, but its talents stretch beyond its appealing looks. Beneath those crisp body lines is a car that shares much with its Volkswagen Group relations resulting in an impressive all-round driving experience. Often referred to as a cut-price Volkswagen Golf, the Leon may not be quite as impressive to look at inside, but much of the same technology is there. Similarly, boot and passenger space are on a par with the best cars in the segment. While the three-door looks very stylish, the more practical fi ve-door model doesn’t lose out in the style stakes. And if the 380-litre boot isn’t quite big enough for you, the ST estate model brings carrying capacity up to 587 litres. For 2017 the Leon gets a mild update with some new lights and other subtle styling diff erences. New technology options such as road sign recognition and Traffi c Jam Assist as part of the adaptive cruise control have been added. The engine range has expanded to take in a new 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine in addition to the existing 1.4-litre petrol and 1.6- and 2.0-litre TDI diesels. The high-performance Leon Cupra is a very fast addition to the range, available in all three body styles.
SEAT Ibiza

The Ibiza is one of the cornerstones of the SEAT range, providing a choice of three- and fi ve-door hatchbacks as well as an estate model. Having undergone some updates in mid-2015 the Ibiza continues to combine stylish looks with an improved interior and newer technology. Features like LED daytime running lights and fi ve-inch touchscreen infotainment systems keep the Ibiza feeling modern. On the move it’s agile and reasonably compact dimensions make it easy to squeeze into tighter car parking spaces. There is an obvious aesthetic appeal with the three-door over the fi ve-door model, though the latter is more versatile. In all, three diff erent engines are off ered and the 90hp 1.2 TSI petrol option provides the most responsive driving experience. We wouldn’t discount the 75hp 1.0-litre MPI engine, especially in the three-door and if you’re usually travelling solo in the car. The FR model adds additional sporty style, and other colour packs are available to order as well. Topping the range is the very fast and great value SEAT Ibiza Cupra.

Thanks to the raised ride height, the choice of an all-wheel drive transmission and more rugged looks, the Leon X-Perience is an alternative to those who don’t want a dedicated SUV. Coming only in estate form, this chunkier Leon adds another facet to the range. Both 150- and 184hp versions of the 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine are available, both of which feature SEAT’s 4Drive all-wheel drive system, with manual and DSG automatic gearboxes respectively. A less powerful 110hp 1.6-litre TDI engine is only off ered with front-wheel drive and a manual transmission, but if you’re considering this engine you may be better off with the regular Leon ST estate instead.
