Jaguar XF
Rivalling the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6 is never going to be an easy task, but the Jaguar XF off ers buyers bored of the German norm something diff erent in this competitive class. A wide range of engines from effi cient 2.0-litre diesels to powerful supercharged petrol V6s mean there’s an XF to take-on all those obvious rivals, even if sales in Ireland will be almost entirely made up of that entry- level diesel. That’s not a complaint, as it’s a good engine, even if it does need more revs than its competition. At least it’s responsive. And while it is at its best regarding economy when mated to the six-speed manual gearbox, the slight penalty in emissions and economy for the eight-speed auto is worth it. On top of that, choose Prestige specifi cation and you gain leather upholstery as standard. There’s no need to spend any more, as the XF is a good-looking, fi ne driving choice against its established rivals.

Jaguar F-Type
The Jaguar F-Type line-up includes two-seat roadsters and coupes, in rear- and four-wheel drive forms, with a choice of two base engines in various outputs from mild (relatively speaking) to wild (very) in the case of the SVR model, which gives the F-Type near supercar pace. Constructed from aluminium, it’s not as light as it could be, but it’s stiff , which adds to its precision, and the F-Type manages to ride and handle well. The V6 supercharged
petrol engines are fast enough, and loud too; even the base model is a boisterous, vocal car, perhaps too much for universal appeal - even in the sports car marketplace. The boot is small in all models, but for all the impracticalities and compromises it comes with the F-Type is hugely appealing simply because it’s so determinedly entertaining, glorious looking and refreshingly outrageous against its established rivals.
